IUCN says lions in Gujarat 19 times safer than in Africa

In a remarkable turn of events, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has reclassified the Asiatic lion, found primarily in Gujarat, from “endangered” to “vulnerable“. The report highlights that the Asiatic lion’s population decline risk is 19 times lower than that of their African counterparts, primarily due to effective measures against poaching and habitat loss in India.

>The history of the IUCN’s species classification system dates back to 1964 with the establishment of the Red List of Threatened Species. This list has become the most comprehensive global approach for evaluating the conservation status of global flora and fauna.

>The Red List categorizes species into nine different conservation statuses:

Not Evaluated (NE): Species not yet assessed against the criteria.

Data Deficient (DD): Not enough data to make an assessment of its risk of extinction.

Least Concern (LC): Species evaluated with a low risk of extinction.

Near Threatened (NT): Species close to qualifying for or likely to qualify for a threatened category in the near future.

Vulnerable (VU): Species considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.

Endangered (EN): Species at a very high risk of extinction in the wild.

Critically Endangered (CR): Species at an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.

Odysseus becomes the first commercial spacecraft to soft-land on the moon

US makes a historic return to Moon after over 50 years as Odysseus becomes the first private lunar lander to touch down on the lunar surface. This feat took place on February 22, 2024. Odysseus was developed by Intuitive Machines, a Houston-based company, and was launched on February 15, 2024, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

From 1883-2024, Lyle’s Golden Syrup held a unique Guinness World Record

The original logo of Lyle’s Golden Syrup has remained constant for over 140 years, earning the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest unchanged brand packaging. However, in 2024, the company decided to modernize its logo and packaging design to appeal to a 21st century audience. The new logo features a lion’s head and a single bee, both in a golden syrupy shape.

KnowALLedge Plus:

> The story of the logo of Lyle’s Golden Syrup is based on a biblical tale of Samson and the lion. According to the Book of Judges, Samson killed a lion with his bare hands and later found a swarm of bees and honey inside its carcass. He ate some of the honey and gave some to his parents, without telling them where it came from. He also posed a riddle to his wedding guests: “Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet.”

> The founder of Lyle’s Golden Syrup, Abraham Lyle, was a religious man who chose this story as a symbol of his product. He registered the image of a dead lion surrounded by bees as his trademark in 1883, along with the slogan “Out of the strong came forth sweetness“.

> In terms of just the logo, another British company, Twinings Tea has used the same logo — capitalized font beneath a lion crest — continuously for 237 years, making it the world’s oldest unaltered logo in continuous use.

> The first registered trademark ever issued by the British government belongs to the red triangle logo of the Bass Ale, in use since 1876. It became so popular that Edouard Manet featured it in his 1882 work “A Bar at the Folies Bergere”.
